Manuel Mathar
Manuel Mathar (b. Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico 1973) lives and works in Monterrey, Mexico. Currently he produces paintings that reference classic genres of portraiture, landscape and still life presented through a contemporary lens, creating tension through saturated compositions, ironic situations and touching on strained emotions of hopelessness, anxiety and pure calamity. In 1996 he founded the collective Los Linchis with Geranrdo Monsivais and Jose Luis Rojas and for many years produced video, performance and installation based work. He has exhibited widely in Mexico and France and has a forthcoming solo exhibition at Galería Proyectos Monclova in Mexico City. Select groups exhibitions include the XIII Bienal Tamayo at the Museo Rufino Tamayo in Mexico City (2006), Entre Siglos at the Museo Metropolitano in Monterrey, Voráz Fuego Ebrio at the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Mexico City (2005), Arte al Dia at the Museo Metropolitano in Monterrey, Mexico (2003), and the Bienal de las Artes Visuales in Yucatán, México (2002). Additionally, he has had individual exhibitions at Espace Chateauneuf in Tours, France (2003) and at the Museo de la Mina in Saint Etienne, France (2000). His work is included the collections of the Museo de Artes y Ciencias de la UNAM in Mexico City, the Pinacoteca de Monterrey, and the Modern Art Museum in Saint Etienne, France.
