José (Tony) Cruz
José (Tony) Cruz (1977), lives and works in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His practice, most commonly site-specific, consists primarily of drawings that may be interpreted through signifiers of measurement and memory. He is interested in the use of accessible materials such as pencil, pen, and objects of every day use. Cruz is working towards a doctorate in Investigación y Prácticas de las Artes (Investigation and Practice of Arts) from the Universidad de Castilla La Mancha, Cuenca, Spain, and studied at the Facultade de Bellas Artes at the Universidad do Porto, Portugal and at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas in Puerto Rico where he received a bachelor’s degree in sculpture. He has participated in the VII Bienal de Pintura de Cuenca, Ecuador (2004), the V Bienal del Caribe, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (2003) and the VII Bienal de La Habana, Cuba (2000). Select group exhibitions include Rutas Intangibles, at Teorética in Costa Rica (2006), Tributo al Mensajero, Puerto Rico (2004), 24/7 at the Contemporary Art Center in Vilnius, Lithuania, and We Surrender at X-Teresa, Mexico City (2003).
