Jorge Méndez Blake (b. Guadalajara, Mexico, 1974. Lives and works in Guadalajara, Mexico) employs classical literature as a point of departure for contemporary conceptual explorations that seek to negotiate current dialogs with traditional notions of art and culture. Often utilizing a single novel or author as the basis for multiple works, spanning sculpture, wall paintings and works on paper, Mendez Blake deconstructs literary texts, inserting his own experience of investigation and interpretation as visual engagement. Méndez Blake is represented by OMR in Mexico City, where he had his most recent solo exhibition Fiction is the Beginning of Exile. He has had solo exhibitions at the Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, Mexico City, the Casa Taller José Clemente Orozco, Guadalajara and Casa Encendida, Madrid. Selected group exhibitions include Limbo a la comodidad del medio, Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Mexico City, Declaraciones, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, Air Container, Museo Raúl Anguiano, Guadalajara, Sólo los personajes cambian, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey, Monterrey, the VIII Bienal Internacional de Pintura de Cuenca, Cuenca, Ecuador, and Pasajes, at the Museo Rufino Tamayo, Mexico City.
